# Neon MCP Server Setup Guide
 

 ## Requirements
 

 - Node.js >= v18.0.0
 - Claude Desktop
 - Neon API key (Generate through the Neon console)
 

 ## Installation
 

 ### Installing via Smithery
 

 To install Neon MCP Server for Claude Desktop automatically via Smithery, run the following command:
 

 ```bash
 npx -y @smithery/cli install neon --client claude
 

Local Usage

  1. Initialize the Neon MCP Server with your Neon API key:

    npx @neondatabase/mcp-server-neon init $NEON_API_KEY
     
  2. Restart Claude Desktop.

  3. Test the setup by running a simple command such as:

    List me all my Neon projects
     

Development

Development with MCP CLI Client

  1. Install dependencies:

    npm install
     
  2. Build the project:

    npm run build
     
  3. Start the watch process (you can keep this open):

    npm run watch
     
  4. Start the MCP Server with your Neon API key:

    cd mcp-client/ && NEON_API_KEY=... npm run start:mcp-server-neon
     

Development with Claude Desktop

  1. Install dependencies:

    npm install
     
  2. Build the project:

    npm run build
     
  3. Start the watch process (you can keep this open):

    npm run watch
     
  4. Initialize the server with your Neon API key:

    node dist/index.js init $NEON_API_KEY
     
  5. Restart Claude each time you want to test changes.

Testing

  1. Set up the .env file according to the .env.example file.

  2. Run the tests:

    npm run test
